Paralyzing Procrastination
May 09, 2008
Greetings! Just a note to say extend my appreciation to each of you who took the time to attend the Women's Empowerment Session on lastnight. (And to those of you who got lost - I promise to send directions for the June 12th session.)
Empowerment was the goal and I have received numerous phone calls and emails stating that you were immediately able to apply some of the principles to your life - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
For those of you who were unable to attend we explored the paralyzing affects of procrastination. Our discussion was guided by the quote "The fabirc of your progress begins with your thoughts, proceeds with your words and is made manifest through your actions." Procrastination is to put off intentionally and habitiually somethng that should be done. Paralyze is to make powerless or ineffective - to bring to an end. Your every act of procrastination is paralyzing your power, your purpose and your promise.
That thing that you are avoiding causes you to prolong and delay that which could be being used to better your life and impact the life of another. This can be changed through your thoughts, your words and your actions. Do something today that paralyzes procrastination instead of allowing procrastination to paralyze you!
Talk to you soon.
On the Rise,
Mercedes
The Seeds of Life
Jun 07, 2008
A long-time mentor of mine, Dr. Vivian H. Burke, called me a few weeks ago and asked me to accompany her to dinner. Without question I accepted the invitation and picked her up promptly at 7:00 pm. As we drove to our destination she informed me that we would be attending a private dinner for world-renown actress Cicely Tyson.
I was thankful to be in the presence of such phenomenal people. I said little, observed much and absorbed all.
At the end of our time together I took the opportunity to speak to Miss Tyson and let her know the enormity of the work she has done – but not as you think. I proceeded to convey to this expert in her craft, that of all the accomplishments in her life, the one that moved me most was the fact that she had reached out to an actress who was unknown at the time (Kimberly Elise) to sow seeds into her life. This act of philanthropy transfers wisdom, knowledge and hope which lights the path for personal and professional achievement.
Mentoring is an act that is often spoken to in the realm of shaping the lives of children. What a wonderful testament it is to have someone pour into your life as you dispense into the life of another. In May of this year a young lady who I have mentored since she was 12 years old completed her undergraduate studies with honors. Brittany Green graduated Magna Cum Laude and is responsible, respectful young individual. I like to think my input into her life has provided her with some foundation that has allowed her to achieve so greatly. While mentoring young people is extremely essential, there are young adults and seasoned professionals who too need the insight and guidance of those who have already walked the path.
When I checked my Post Office Box this week, a letter from Dr. Burke articulating her satisfaction in my accomplishments brought tears to my eyes. I was overwhelmed with gratitude at the thought of her pleasure with the direction of my life. Whether it’s Miss Tyson and Kimberly, Mercedes and Brittany or Dr. Burke and me – when two people can see the fruit from the seeds which have been sown, the harvest is more enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved.
Sow into someone’s life today (and always) – or receive what is necessary for your growth.
